Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) are pre-defined areas of various streets within which the local business implement special projects to improve their local areas.
The size or geographic area of the BID is decided when the BID is being established by the local businesses themselves.
Essentially a BID is a partnership arrangement between the local business community, stakeholders, resident groups and the local authority. They are focused on providing enhanced and additional services to those already supplied by Dublin City Council, i.e. the level of services are over and above those supplied by Dublin City Council not introduced to replace the Council's work.
Typically, these additional services initially focus on clean, green and safe streets and can include services such as visitor assistance, marketing services, PR services and event management and promotion.
Removal of litter, cleaning of gum, street washing, greening of streets - shrubs, flowers
Visitor assistance & hospitality officer, marketing, PR, events, promotional banners, business retention and investment recruitment
local transport initiatives for shoppers, street furniture, local maps for business, culture, and leisure, shop front design, public art, parking
Enable businesses to get involved directly with their local communities, provide support mechanisms for families currently lacking in city centre areas, facilitate the need of businesses to help integration of our multi-ethic residents.
Each BID Board (made up of a board of property owners, tenants, residents and Local Authority) will decide how best to use its resources whether in introducing cleaning services, environmental improvement services, security services or special projects.
BIDs last a pre-determined period of time - generally five years, after which time the members vote to retain the BID.
The formation of a BID is a voluntary exercise.
